Disneyland accident

Hong Kong Disneyland on Saturday shut its Autopia driving ride after one of its vehicles derailed from a fixed track, a spokeswoman said Saturday.

Park spokeswoman Glendy Chu said the accident occurred when the driver, a young woman, hit one of the barricades surrounding the track. She said the woman was not injured.

Chu said the Hong Kong government's Electrical and Mechanical Services Department ordered the electric car ride shut for inspections. Government spokesman Raymond Wong said government investigators have not reported back their findings.

Hong Kong Disneyland, which is a joint venture between the Hong Kong government and the Walt Disney Co. (DIS), opened in September 2005 and the Autopia ride opened in the summer of 2006.

Before 9/11 it was odd to cry alone in the park.

How's your news?

Um... Uh. I'm putting this here because... um. Hey look over there!

Dig the crazy sponsor on these videos.

Oh wait!
Here is the opening of this poetry slam:

Ya still here?

I'm actually digging this. Its a shame the clips were posted with that damn tag at the end.

Ok. One word bothers me in the next clip.

"chudder"
"Hey Gavin whats going on? I mean you've been posting a lot and they are all kinda bitter and sucky. Are you O.K.?"

NO no I'm not O fuckin' K!

I'm bitter and hateful at the moment. I'm working through some problems and hitting roadblocks at every turn.

First off. I don't like any form of mass entertainment.
Lets get that straight.
I dont like movies. I don't like music, T.V., plays, docutainment featurettes, shadow puppets or ponyrides.
What I do like is to tear them apart bit by bit and tear those little bits into a million smaller bits and then throw the whole thing away.
Thats my thing. Thats what I do.
Remember that next time you think you have something in common with me. I may like what you like but for a very different reason. I like to HATE IT!
There I feel better already.

I have not been feeling good for about a month now. I'm still without insurance and a little thing put a big scare into me last week. Ya see I got this little spider bite on my ankle. It started out like a little bump then it got bigger and then it turned into this giant open non-healing wound. It was this 1/4 hole with a giant red circle around it. It looked like the spider was trying to create some sort of golf course on my leg. It started to really hurt and not heal. My fear was I was bitten by some sort of kill ya slow spider. I showed it to someone at work who pointed out the wound looked a little green and suggested I get it checked out.
I agree I should get it checked out. But where? I would have to take a whole day off to go to a community hospital. I cant afford that. It explains why I have been sleeping poorly and when I do I wake up in a sweat. So I have been alternating with neosprin and alcohol. and it seems to be clearing up. It still looks gruesome but eh... what can ya do. The good thing is its healing up and I didn't have to go rushing off to the doctor. The bad thing is IF it was something I needed to get checked out I would have been at a very big loss on where to get that done.

So thats it. I've turned into a dick because of a spiderbite? NOOOOOOoooo.
Thats not it.
I'm having other troubles too. I guess I want to tell you that but not tell you what they are.
How odd is that?

You are in this video somewhere. Which one of these kids are you?

I'm the little kid crying in the back because that damn jerk up front ruined the production just like we all knew he would.

Pluto freaks on mainstreet.

Another fine example of how Disneylad hires the best of the best. Here is Pluto freaking out.

Pissed Pluto Chases Brat - Watch more free videos

They are supposed to have "handlers" who keep the costumed people safe. Pluto chasing a kid at top speed over railroad tracks is not safe and whatever the incident was it should have never gotten to this point. Pluto is clearly in the wrong. Guest safety should be a primary concern not retaliation for being kicked in the nuts by mommies little over-sugared mistake. My question is where was the Cast member who was with Pluto? It looks like he was out there all alone.

Disney needs to fire everyone in the park. They need to shut the place down for six months and restructure the whole damn thing. Top to bottom. Get rid of all the creepy people who cant get state or federal jobs because they would fail a background check. Rehire new people that are not bitter or jaded. People who can tell time using an analog clock. Pay the new employees a reasonable rate. Hire ride safety engineers that service one ride only not several in one night.
Pay benefits. Keep people who want to be career park workers don't "let them go" because they have reached the top of the pay scale.

I'm taking video of the fine workers in the park next time I go. So you can see them hard at work holding themselves upright.

AH the last line is magic

HIV variant offers vaccine hope.

Vital clues that might lead to an AIDS vaccine have been discovered by researchers studying the genetic code of HIV-2 – the less virulent and less common form of the virus.

Although both forms of the virus infect humans, HIV-2 goes on to cause AIDS in only 20 per cent of infected people. In contrast, HIV-1, which has spread disastrously through sub-Saharan Africa, goes on to cause AIDS in 98 per cent of people who do not take anti-viral drugs.

A team from Oxford University and the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) unit in the Gambia set out to determine why the human immune system is better able to resist HIV-2, which is largely confined to West Africa. Their studies centred on a group of women infected with the virus for over a decade.

They discovered that a tiny part of one viral gene called gag makes HIV-2 vulnerable to attack from the human immune system. What’s more, this gene hardly ever mutates.

The gag gene, which codes for just 18 amino acids, provides a signal for white blood cells, called T-cells, to attack the virus and sweep it out of the blood stream before it can do further damage.

"Clearly there is something special about the gag region – and it looks like vaccine researchers should be focusing on it," says Aleksandra Leligdowicz who leads the MRC unit. The thinking is that a vaccine containing the right part of the gag gene could trigger the body’s immune response, making it better able to prevent HIV-2 infection developing into full blown AIDS.

Vaccine key

Leligdowicz notes that the two per cent of people infected with HIV-1 who do not progress to AIDS show a strong T-cell response to the gag region as well.

Even more intriguing, most strains of HIV-1 also have a highly-conserved gag gene. The key to better vaccines could be finding just the right part of this region to include, she says.

The findings also indicate that a T-cell based or "cell mediated" defence against HIV is enough to render HIV harmless. For over a decade researchers have argued whether or not an immune response that involved antibodies in addition to T-cells was also vital.

According to Leligdowicz, the latest results suggest it is possible to devise a vaccine to treat HIV, which although not preventing infection or eradicating the virus, will stop the wearing down of the immune system that leads to AIDS.

Virologist Robin Weiss who researches HIV vaccines at University College London says. "Ultimately, I think that a vaccine that actually prevents infection will need to make an anti-body response as well as cell-mediated one.

"But the idea of a therapeutic vaccine does have legs. Not only would it treat people, it might make them less able to infect other people, so you would get a double dividend. The study of HIV-2, although a less important pathogen, might well teach us some valuable lessons."

Lego Hawking

OK. Who did this?
I want names!

Why can't all shows be like Geraldo?

I miss the days when this kind of spontaineous violence was allowed on TV.

YES.
I MISS THE VIOLENCE.

Not "war violence" but idiot getting smacked down violence. I'm happy the hate speech is no longer acceptible.

I wish there was some sort of cross over show that combined Judge Judy and Ultimate Cage Fighting.

Don't sweat over the details.

On May 29, 2003, 50 days after the fall of Baghdad, President Bush proclaimed a fresh victory for his administration in Iraq: Two small trailers captured by U.S. and Kurdish troops had turned out to be long-sought mobile "biological laboratories." He declared, "We have found the weapons of mass destruction."

We all know now that they didn't find any weapons of mass destruction. The weapons never existed.

They found two little trailers.

Disney Fails to Monitor Sweatshops.

Thanks to Wat for handing this article over.

Workers at a Chinese factory making Disney toys are overworked, underpaid, exposed to dangerous toxins and forced to live in filthy conditions, a labour rights group said in a report Wednesday.
The study, released on the second anniversary of the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland, said factory workers complained they were forced to work 28 days a month and up to 15 hours a day. (Park workers work less than 40 hours a week and are not eligible for benefits.)

Staff at Haowei Toys in southern China also are not allowed to take time off during peak seasons, according to the report released by the Hong Kong-based Students and Scholars against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM). (Park employees get just get sacked and replaced by another corn fed drone.)

"The conditions at Haowei reflect the failure of the Disney system to monitor and respond effectively to violations of the Disney code of conduct and the workers' rights the code professes to defend," the report said. (Disney Code o' WHAT? Ask any Disney employee and they'll tell you they wouldn't expect anything less.)

About a dozen activists staged a protest outside the theme park, waving a banner that read "No Disney Sweatshop Toys" and urging the US entertainment giant to improve working conditions. (No one cared.)

Staff are paid 2.5 yuan (32 US cents) per hour, 62.5 percent of the legal minimum wage of 4.02 yuan, while overtime premiums are also below the minimum required by law, said the report compiled from interviews with 35 employees. (Those people will be let go or killed)

The study charges that managers fine workers five yuan for toilet breaks that exceed five minutes and 10 yuan for refusing to do overtime work. (A welcome plan for workers in the park.)

The report also said workers in the paint spraying and pad printing departments complained that they were sometimes breathing in chemical and paint fumes for hours due to poor ventilation, exposing them to health risks. (Unlike the park where the smell of churros and vomit and curdling breast milk left in strollers baking in the hot sun are a free part of the whole experience.)

The employees are not given insurance against work injuries, nor are they granted pensions, the study said. (Same as the park cast members)

The report includes pictures of filthy communal toilets in the staff dormitory, saying pipes are often blocked, causing waste to spill out. (um... Park bathrooms are not much better and people pay to have access to them.)

Walt Disney said it takes "claims of unfair labour practices very seriously, and (will) investigate any such allegations thoroughly". (Walt is dead and he said no such thing.)

It admitted its own investigation had revealed violations at the Haowei factory, adding that action would be taken to rectify the problem.

"Disney is currently working on a factory remediation plan with the licensee who has placed orders with this factory," it said in a statement.

Hong Kong Disneyland, which opened on September 12, 2005, is struggling to attract visitors. The park would not disclose attendance numbers and would only say it has been given consistently high guest satisfaction ratings. (the 5 people who could afford to go there loved it.)

CBS Paramount puts its official seal of approval on Kanye's outburst

Backstage at the MTV awards Kanye West threw a fit because he didn't get a Moonman award. It seems that CBS Paramount wants everyone to know they enjoyed the outburst and have stamped a trademark and their logos on the end of the clip.

So is the clip sympathetic to Kanye's realization that the awards are a joke?
Hardly.
CBS Paramount and MTV are all part of one big "charming" Viacom family. Someone there wanted everyone to see Kanye acting like a full blown idiot. Trouble is by sticking the logo disclaimer at the end of the clip they have shown this is as close to a fully endorsed smear as you can get.

Looks like Kanye struck a nerve with an executive at Viacom. Good for him.

Goodbye Mrs. Livingston.

Miyoshi Umeki, 78, a Japanese-born singer and actress who became the first Asian performer to win an Academy Award -- for "Sayonara" (1957) -- and who played a housekeeper on the TV series "The Courtship of Eddie's Father," died Aug. 28 at the Licking Park Manor nursing home in Licking, Mo. She had cancer.

Ms. Umeki played the role of Mei Li in the 1961 film version of "Flower Drum Song" and appeared in a handful of mediocre East-meets-West romances, comedies and dramas -- "Cry for Happy" with Glenn Ford, "The Horizontal Lieutenant" with Jim Hutton and "A Girl Named Tamiko" with Laurence Harvey.

She gladly retired in 1972 after a three-year stint playing Mrs. Livingston on ABC's "The Courtship of Eddie's Father." The sitcom, starring Bill Bixby, was based on an earlier Glenn Ford film about an urbane widower being set up on dates by his son.

One of my only recollections of that show was the episode where Mrs. Livingston lovingly sews a teddybear for Eddie but is beat down like a dog who chews slippers because she sewed it out of an old American Flag. I thought Mr. Eddie's Father was a real jerk. I never understood why he didn't marry her. I hated the themesong but still watched the damn thing. I actually liked the ADR conversational long shots of Eddie and his father even though, at that age, I could tell they wern't speaking.

Ms. Umeki completely withdrew from public life after "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" ended. She co-owned and operated a business renting editing equipment to film studios and university film programs before moving to Missouri from North Hollywood, Calif., about five years ago. The only time she performed was about four months ago, when she taught her granddaughter a Japanese song.
